Do you have a space in your home where you’re struggling to have it flow just the way you want it to? Maybe you went out and bought stuff to spruce it up, got everything in there, moved things around a million times, and it still doesn’t look exactly how you wanted it to. Well I want to share with you what I would say is the best thing to do when you’re decorating a room.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know my passion for all things home decor and DIY and that I used to have a blog called The Resourceful Homemaker where I shared my DIYs and home decor tips.

I’m almost always working on some sort of project. Recently I gave my vanity table a makeover and I’m currently working on reupholstering some chairs.

Shortly after I had Bennett, we had to leave our home and unfortunately have had to bounce around living in some of our family’s spare rooms. I’m so grateful for their generosity and realize how fortunate we are. But it is hard to have to live in a place that isn’t really your home. So I’ve tried my best to make each space feel as cozy and comfortable as possible to help Bennett and me find a little more peace about being where we are at this point in our life.

It’s one of my biggest passions. I love taking simple things and bringing them to life in a space. In any room I decorate, my goal is for it to look beautiful, but still be comfortable and functional. When I’m decorating a room, I try my best to create a space that’s inviting, comfortable, and a place where people just want to dwell and be.

I think it’s so important to love the space you live in. It’s where you create your life, host friends and family, and it’s your place of comfort. So I fully believe that it’s important to create a space where you feel your best in.

My vision for you is that each morning, you can get up, find that cozy spot in your home, grab a book, sip some coffee, and look over your home and just smile at the beauty because it brings you so much joy to just dwell there.

But I also understand the frustration that can come with not knowing how to create that, what to put together with what, and if it will look good as a whole. Maybe you get stuck on working with colors and prints or maybe it’s different decorating styles that throw you off. Either way, I’ve got a solution for you. It’s the best way for you to get a good vision for what everything will look like together when you’re decorating a room.

The Best Thing to Do When You’re Decorating a Room

Decorating a Room Using a Vision Board

This seems like a simple idea, but I can’t explain how helpful it is! I think it often gets overlooked, feels too overwhelming, or people just don’t want to spend the time on it. But it’s so worth it and easier than it seems.

I’ve been wanting to switch out the pillows on my bed. The combo I currently have isn’t giving me the look I’m trying to achieve. I’ve tried various pillow sizes, colors, patterns, and something just isn’t working. But before I buy new pillows or pillow covers, I thought it’d be smart to put them all on a vision board and see exactly how they’ll look together first and if they bring me the look I’m looking for.

I’ll help you create your own vision board by giving you my simple tips and tricks and give you an example of one I’m working on now!

Step One: Find an App to Create Your Vision Board

There are a lot of apps you can use to create a vision board. Or you could even create on in Microsoft Word. My personal favorite tool to use is Canva. I think Canva is easy to use, it’s free, and there are a lot of different ways to customize your work. I recommend doing this on a laptop because it’s a bit easier, but you can do it on your mobile device as well.

Step Two: Select Pictures of Decor Items

Search the web and find decor that inspires you and what you think you might want for decorating a room. It doesn’t have to be specifically what you would buy, but this is just to give you an idea of style, color, and pattern. Take screenshots of each item. (Tip: If you’re doing this on a laptop, there is a way to screenshot photos on there as well. Just Google how to screenshot on your specific device.)

If you have items in the room you’re decorating that you would like to keep (ex: you want new pillows, but you’re keeping your current couch), just find that item online or find something that resembles your item to help give you the full vision of the space.

Step Three: Remove the Backgrounds on the Photos

Save your screenshotted photos in a folder and upload them to a website that removes backgrounds on photos. I use PhotoScissors because it’s free to use and gets the job done. But there are several sites online you can try and I believe you can even do it in Canva if you have Canva Pro. When you’re selecting your photos beforehand, take into consideration that you will be removing the background of the photo. So try to select a photo that shows a good angle of the item you like, preferably forward facing. Many websites include a picture of the item for sale with a white background. Those are the best photos to snag.

Once you remove the background, save the photo and upload it onto the app you’re using to create your vision board.

Step Four: Create and Design

Once your photos are uploaded, create your space! Design the room exactly how you want it set up or you could just throw all the photos on randomly. I prefer to design the room exactly how it will be set up because I think that gives me a more precise idea of how things will look.
Here’s my vision board I’m currently working on. I’m trying to give my bedding a fresh, new look, specially working with pillow options.

For other ideas, I also created a vision board for a gender-neutral nursery on my home decor blog. Check it out here.

Step Five: Go Shopping!

We’re now on the best step! Shopping your items. Now that you have your vision board, hopefully you have a better idea on how you want your space to look and what items you like. But if it still feels overwhelming, I’ve searched for some of my favorite ideas and categorized them by room. These are great neutral pieces that go with almost anything when you’re decorating a room.
